Instructor: Anna Johnson

My name is Anna Johnson and this is my eighth year at Cooper.  Mrs. Yolanda Rivas is my assistant, and we have 20 students.  My teaching philosophy consists on providing a caring and safe environment in my classroom, where children will be willing to explore and be challenged. I take a Vygotskian approach to learning, where language plays a central role in mental development, and both physical manipulation and social interaction are necessary for optimal development.

Most of my teaching is done in small groups during the day, and my students spend most of their time working with manipulatives, or interacting with other students while playing in centers. We plan our play activities on paper, and everyday the students have a chance to practice writing their names, and drawing a picture of themselves playing in centers. It’s during play-planning (or scaffolded writing technique) that the students spend time working on sounds, and letters. The students have P.E. everyday in the gym and/or outside (weather permitting), and we have music, rhyming, and story time daily.

I am sure that my curriculum will allow my students to get ready for the academic challenges of kindergarten.  You can contact me at (806) 687-2700 extension 8107 during my conference time from 8:10 to 8:40, 12:30 to 1:00, or between 2:00 and 3:00.
